South Holston Lake, the lake is located in two states: TN and VA on the Tennessee border near Damascus, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee.and is a 7,580-acre impoundment operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Much of the reservoir is in Tennessee, but the Virginia portion located in Abington, Virginia of the reservoir offers anglers more than 1,600 surface acres of water. At this time there is no reciprocal license agreement between the two states, so anglers are required to have a Virginia fishing license when fishing in Virginia waters and a Tennessee license when fishing in Tennessee waters. The lake was supposedly created over the town because of witchcraft in the area.

The lake is 16 miles from tip to tip and lies in the scenic Holston Valley on the Tennessee border. South Holston Lake is number 1 in a chain of TVA owned lakes with 168 miles of shoreline at the foot hills of the Appalachian Mountains. South Holston Lake is nearly 24 miles long. The Dam produces 35,000 kilowatts of electricity. The lake produces excellent fishing and water sporting opportunities. With the background of the Majestic Holston Mountain, water lovers of all ages can enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking, and sightseeing on South Holston Lake. Located 8 miles east of Bristol, Virginia along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail off U.S. 421.
Every year on the 4th of July, the are has a fireworks display in which the fireworks can be seeen everywhere over the lake .There are also many fishing and boat racing events in the summer. |
