Ocoee River. The Ocoee, site of the canoe and kayak slalom races for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was the only Olympic venue outside Georgia. The Ocoee River is fast gaining an international reputation for whitewater sport, but the power of water does more than create rapids and eddies. Long before modern man discovered the fun of the hydraulics, his forefathers learned to use the mighty Ocoee to produce electricity. Today, power and recreation share the river. Tennessee State Parks, through the Hiwassee Scenic River State Park, is responsible for the day-to-day management of recreation on the Ocoee River. When the river is running, Park Rangers are on site to provide assistance, keep traffic moving, and monitor activities at the put-in and take-out. The state was given this authority through an agreement with TVA, which provides water and the U. S. Forest Service, which owns the land.
